The Power of Companionship: Why Animals for Elders Exists
Loneliness is one of the most overlooked challenges facing older adults today. For many seniors, especially those living alone, days can feel long and quiet. But sometimes, the simplest solution can make the biggest difference.
A warm presence. A routine. A reason to get up in the morning. A companion. At Animals for Elders (AFE), we believe that no one should have to age without connection and that some of the best companions come with four legs and a second chance story of their own.
Where It All Began
Animals for Elders was founded in 2022 by entrepreneur and shelter volunteer Carrie Van Wert, who saw both heartbreaking and hopeful things. On one side, shelters were filled with animals waiting for homes. On the other hand, seniors longed for companionship but were often unable to afford the costs of pet ownership.
The solution felt simple but powerful: What if we could bring them together and remove the barriers between them?
Why Animal Companionship Matters
The bond between humans and animals is more than just comforting; it’s life-changing.
For seniors, animal companionship can:
Reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation
Provide daily structure and purpose
Improve emotional and mental well-being
Encourage gentle activity and routine
And for shelter animals, it means something just as profound: a second chance at a loving home.
How We Make It Possible
At AFE, we don’t just encourage adoption. We make it sustainable.
We provide funding to seniors aged 70+ who qualify, covering:
Adoption fees
Veterinary care after adoption
Up to $1,500 per year in qualifying pet expenses
By working directly with shelters and supporting seniors financially, we ensure these relationships are built to last.
A Small Beginning, A Big Vision
We are just at the start of our journey. But every connection we help create, every senior who gains a companion, every animal who finds a home, represents something bigger.
A quieter house becomes a home again. A shelter kennel becomes a couch, a lap, a life. And that’s the kind of change we’re here to make.
